Lack of radio listeners concerns station WKNH - Keene Equinox - News: "Although most students are aware that it exists, 92 percent of students at Keene State College do not listen to the college radio station, WKNH according to a survey conducted last month by a journalism class. WKNH is a student-run radio station at KSC that has been in existence since 1971. The offices are located on the third floor of the Young Student Center, and the station is licensed to the Board of Trustees at the University System of New Hampshire. "

Hmmm...a freeform program format (which is unpopular with most listeners) with a tiny signal in a crowded radio region (southern New Hampshite), and a website that has a lot of dead links. Oh yes, the website says they might be off the air so try streaming instead. Yeah, sure.

I love college radio but why exactly is WKNH surprised that most of the campus has never heard of them?

Now what WOULD be surprising is if WKNH did market research and then adopted a specific format targeted to an underserved audience, and coupled that with an aggressive marketing campaign on the air, in print (perhaps on TV) and on the ground to reach that audience. Ah, but then the DJ's wouldn't be able to play whatever they want. Can't have that now can we?

Come on guys...if you wanna be a proving ground (or playground...po-TAY-toe / po-TAH-toe) for the DJ's to experiment in, you're gonna have to accept the fact that most people aren't going to listen to you. Some will, of course, and those few are more likely to be devoted listeners...but 90% of your audience not listening is not surprising at all.
