Negotiation not new law needed

"The dispute began in 2003 when Akaku cut off funds to Maui Community College, which broadcasts classes on Channel 55. Akaku President Sean McLaughlin said MCC wouldnt agree to conditions recommended by Akakus auditors. In other words, MCC apparently didnt meet Akakus bookkeeping standards, which may or may not have warranted the funding cut."

Making Waves: Student-run stations increase publicity - Index - TruLife

"Radio waves are heating up friendly competition between two Truman radio stations.

Senior Jonathan Thacker, KTRM 88.7 The Edge station manager, said The Edge has been operating for about 30 years with different call letters and Dobson Radio, now known as 107.5, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this March. In recent weeks, 107.5 began promoting new radio shows and lectures by putting up numerous posters around campus. "

Editor: If the article is correct, 107.5 seems to be operating a station that is not in compliance with the applicable FCC rules. CBI is an advocate for student media, but nor if its operations are... well illegal.

The Orion Online - Two turntables and a microphone

Some excerpts from the article...

"Jill Paydon, the general manager at KZFR 90.1 FM, in Chico, has been involved with radio since the late 1970s.
She started her radio career with KHSU, the Humboldt State radio station, as a student DJ and she knows the importance of including students' perspectives on the radio.

KZFR 90.1 FM is a non-commercial radio station, so the music and programs are eclectic.
'Working in community radio there's a wide age range where you get to work with so many people,' Paydon said. 'Here we try to provide a variety of music and information and try to attract people of all demographics.'

David Ballerini a.k.a. DJ Fet Fet is a junior business major and also host of a hardcore rock show on KCSC, Chico State's student-run Internet radio station.

'Anyone can DJ,' Ballerini said. 'It's easy to overcome a phobia of public speaking, because all that's in front of you when you're on the air is a sound board and a microphone,' he said after one of his on-air performances in the KCSC broadcast booth. "

Radio Ink - 'OH &$^%(#@)!!!:' New Indecency Act Has Broadcasters Concerned

As reported by David Hinckley in the New York Daily News, with the US Congress likely to pass the Broadcast Indecency Enforcement Act of 2005 as early as today, broadcast groups are mobilizing against the legislation they say is less a surgical strike against indecency than machine-gun fire that could wound both broadcasters and artists.
