Corporate bigfoot CSN tunes out community stations

"A pending decision by the Federal Communications Commission could bring CSN International one step closer to a much stronger Massachusetts presence at the potential expense of noncommercial and college stations. If the syndicate is allowed to transmit its satellite feed, 20,000 watts strong, from a tower in Plymouth, it could muddle the signal of many lower-power stations including Boston Colleges student-run WZBC (90.3 FM) for several hundred thousand listeners on the South Shore. It would also set a terrible precedent, allowing a nationwide broadcaster to take up valuable FM bandwidth with syndicated programming antithetical to the local spirit noncommercial radio is supposed to support."

Clear Channel Calls For Satellite Indecency Regulation

"The chorus in Washington, D.C. about leveling the indecency playing field across media platforms is getting louder, with Clear Channel weighing in on the prickly issue. Andrew Levin, CC's executive VP and chief legal officer, says the company is concerned about what it calls a growing disparity in Federal Communications Commission regulations concerning media content delivered over competing platforms.

While Levin questions whether Congress is ready to tackle the controversial matter of enforcing the indecency statute at satellite radio just yet, he says Clear Channel is talking to Congress -all the time about it- and there is some traction in Congress about the disparity between the treatment among these competing platforms. "

Editor: This is an uphill battle. The courts have restricted Indecency to FREE, over the air operations in the past. The immediate concern in those cases were cable outlets. Satellite wasn't really in the picture at that time, at least not to the degree they are now. Notice that the article and the focus of CC is satellite and not cable. This is a calculated move to get a foot in the door for parity. Even if Congress passes new laws to include satellite, there will ultimately be a court battle over this issue.
