LATE LAST Thursday afternoon, March 3, the Merrimack Valley airwaves were crackling with righteous indignation. WUML was broadcasting Wall of Sound, and the day’s fare was classic doo-wop. In between tracks, the young female host urged her listeners to get on over to the O’Leary Library, where a protest meeting was gathering within the hour. She also played a tape of a local Cub Scout den yelling its enthusiasm for WUML, a recording it had made during a tour of the station. Given the context, it was a not-so-subtle reminder that the station is part of the community.

Minnesota Daily : Radio K and its huge library are vital to the University

"The assertion that Minnesota Public Radios new station, The Current, goes further by including a much wider selection and variety of music, is a completely empty claim. I am writing as an alumna of the University and as the mother of a Radio K volunteer. I attended the hearing on Wednesday, but was unable to speak because of time limitations. I felt so strongly about the issue of funding cuts to Radio K that I rearranged my work schedule just so I could attend the hearing. I would like to let you know just how important Radio K has become to my family.
