March 2002 CBI Newsletter

1) As promised, be looking for our mailing with details about the Call to Entry for CBI Awards. Should be in your mailboxes around Easter. The competition is free to all CBI members, so join today if you've been procrastinating. All awards will be presented at the Fall conference in Kissimmee October 31-November 3 so budget now to be there to accept. Thanks to Chuck Bailey at Marshall University for his work creating and coordinating this effort and best of luck to all entrants.

2) Recent discussion and action regarding DMCA and RIAA is available on the web site at collegebroadcasters.org. Please join the effort if you are so inclined and haven't already--we need to have our voices heard on this issue if we wish to have the choice of streaming audio on the web.

3) Michael Black and myself will be among those representing CBI in NYC this weekend. We will have CBI membership forms and other information available. If you have any questions or concerns and are going to be there, please look us up at the Roosevelt Hotel through Saturday morning.

4) Start thinking about people/session topics you would like to help arrange/be on panel/see for the fall conference. The more people in the thought process and planning, the better the conference. We need to finalize these with Jim Gorham of CMA by June.

5) How do you decide which students from your station get to go to conferences? Some ideas that work for some stations:

-set up a point system within your station. When someone does something from the list, they get a point and the ones with the most points by decision day get to go.
-voted on by your board or leaders
-voted on by the station as a whole
-students holding specific positions always go, such as the Program Director, student manager, etc.
-mix of years in school (one senior, one junior or some combination)
-only have money for one room, so all must be same gender
-no budget money, so whoever can pay their own way goes

Other ways of doing it? Please pass on.
