  1. WEBCASTING REPORT: All Webcasters using recorded music must file a new form with the U.S. Copyright Office by July 1, 2004 along with a $20 filing fee. Failure to file the form and submit payment could result in the station losing its ability to participate in the Webcasting settlement negotiated in part by CBI in May of 2003. A link to the form is available at the CBI Web site.

Stations that recently filed for renewal should make sure your new license is properly posted (or retained in a folder at the posting location) when received. Until the new license is received, make sure the FCC's acknowledgment that your renewal application has been accepted for filing (Form 101-A) is retained with your old license.

  3. TELEVISION LICENSE RENEWAL REMINDER: FCC licensed television stations in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia should have filed license renewal applications by June 1. Such stations should make Post Filing Announcements on the 1st and 16th day of June, July and August.

Other licensed television stations with 2004 renewal deadlines (AL, FL, GA, NC, SC, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands) should be preparing their renewal applications now. The FCC Web site provides information about the license renewal process for television broadcast stations.

Television stations should contact CBI for additional information. Review the requirements NOW! Contact CBI Chair with questions.

  4. QUARTERLY REPORT REMINDER: FCC licensed stations must file an “Issues/programs list” for the April 1 to June 30, 2004 calendar quarter on July 10th. This list must be placed in the station’s Public Inspection File. See § 73.3527 of the rules or contact for more information.

  5. FALL CONVENTION: CBI is still soliciting Broadcast/Electronic Media sessions for the Nashville convention. Have ideas? Contact !

CBI also has a signup form on the Web site for Nashville programs. If you've given a program in the past or have a great story to tell, please go to the form and send in your information. It's a big help that all the info is in one place.

For more information, see the Web site or contact .

  6. TRAVEL PREP: Time to reserve hotel space and make travel plans for our national convention in Nashville, November 4 - 7. Visit the CBI Web site for information on making reservations at the Renaissance Hotel in Nashville. Be on the lookout this fall if your station would like to participate in the live Webcast from the convention.

  7. STUDENT JOURNALISTS: CBI, CMA and ACP have once again teamed up with National Public Radio to bring the NPR Next Generation Radio Project to the national convention. This is a five day training project designed for college students interested in broadcast careers. It puts students together with professionals to develop their skill in a hands-on workshop that results in a finished audio production. Last year, students from Arizona State University, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Colorado State University took part in the project. You can listen to their product at http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/nextgen/20031112.nextgen.cmagazine.ram

Interested students must apply for this unique opportunity. Space is limited and only those with a demonstrated interest in a broadcast career will be considered. Applications will be made available on the CBI Web site.

  8. CBI BOARD NOMINATIONS: CBI Elections Commissioner Greg Newton is calling for nominations for the CBI Board of Directors. Four of the five board positions are up for selection by CBI members. Nominations will be accepted through September 20, 2004. For more information, contact
