September 2001

Hope you and your stations were/are able to provide programming, support and comfort to your listeners during this time as well as a crash course for your students. This is when radio and TV stations show their strengths.

1) Just a few short weeks until we all get together in New Orleans. Remember to bring business cards and other station material to share with the other stations. Not to scare anyone in advance but just a warning--at the NAB Radio Show last week, a few students from Michigan State were mugged by people holding a rifle on a side street off of Bourbon. Please remind students that may be unfamiliar with city life about the possible dangers of straying off the beaten path so we can avoid any incidents.

2) We are developing a CBI letter in response to RIAA streaming regulations which should be posted to the list in the near future. Please read, respond and lend your support to this cause as we try to represent college broadcasting as a group instead of as individuals.

3) If you haven't done so already, please send in your station ballots for the first CBI board.

4) Ideas to motivate & retain all those new students you just recruited:

  • a) Station member of the week with name posted in a prominent location in the station.
  • b) Department of the week
  • c) Comp extra prizes, posters or CD's to department members who did that little extra last week
  • d) Set up a priority list among station members using various criteria (seniority breaks ties) to determine who gets to interview the band/comedian coming to campus this semester.
  • e) Priority list can also be used for who goes to news conferences and/or uses sports press passes
  • f) When someone on the staff is given a position or promotion, either work with campus PR or send out your own press release to the students hometown newspaper. They and their parents will appreciate the stroke when their name appears in print.
  • g) Submit member names for campus awards such as Who's Who and others. Even if they don't get the award, it will make them feel good that you thought they were good enough to be nominated.
  • h) Make sure the best people the station has to offer are the ones that go to the conferences like CBI and/or other events that the station attends.
  • i) Each department names a department member of the week.
  • j) Start/maintain a "Where Are They Now" board with names of station alums who are working in the industry.

This can be a "you can get there from here" motivator and a network start.
